Perseids and the summer Sun

Drawing of the Perseids meteor shower 2013 by Roel Weijenberg.

This is a bit of a (late) update. We (my boyfriend Steven and I) went to look for Perseids! After a lovely weekend, where he took me for a walk in the Veluwe and where I was treated to homemade pancakes for dinner, we had decided to go to bed early for a change. It was the evening before the peak of the Perseids, almost halfway in last month. And then we noticed a bright sky – brighter than any sky I have seen lately, with parts of the Milky Way clearly visible from the backyard. The decision to take this opportunity and seize the night was made quickly.

So we went to this lovely field, which was surrounded by water, cows and a lot of birds, but I would only see that when we went back the next morning, as it was very dark this night. The perfect spot for what we were about to do. Sleeping bag and mozzy repellent in hand, we lay down in the middle of that field in the middle of the night. Watching the stars together. Yes, it was as romantic as you can imagine actually. Meanwhile we had some sciency discussions and we saw a few satellites.

And a few ‘falling stars’. And a very long and bright Perseid-falling star! We simultaneously exclaimed a ‘wow’ when we saw the flash of light from this meteor entering the Earth’s atmosphere. Not long after that one we really did call it a night though. We had a couple of more weekends left in the summer Sun and on one of these nights, we saw it set in Epen. Never pass up a sunset! Steven also pointed out this Sun dog, from the car, on our way to the beach of Zeeland…

Although this summer doesn’t seem over just yet – temperature wise, I have returned to both my schools for a Happy New School Year. Let’s see how much work we can do in this one! There are also a few lectures and interviews planned and I’m sure I’ll be tweeting from my next trip to England soon. But I might be a tad quiet on here for a while as I’ll be busy living the dream. As Robin put it; it’s been the sort of summer you feel nostalgia for, even as you are experiencing it. I couldn’t agree more… Keep looking up!

Such a stunning sketch! I like the pictures as well (whooh-haaa that sundog!). And although it looks like I’m posing in the tree, I really am not… Loved to be part of your summer, and loving it even more that I still am. ;)
