Hanny’s Voorwerp in the paper, a Hubble picture and the discovery of Peas

Two months ago I shed some light on how we wrote the papers about Hanny’s Voorwerp. The one from the team at ASTRON was just out and recently the one from the Galaxy Zoo team came out too.

I’ve updated the links page, as there has been some discussion going on on the Galaxy Zoo blog about both team’s findings. The one from the ASTRON team made it on the cover of Astronomy & Astrophysics and I also got a few mentions in the June issue of ASTRON’s newsletter. A direct link to the official scientific paper about Hanny’s Voorwerp from the Galaxy Zoo team can be found here:

With these recent spotlights on my Voorwerp, I received a few questions again about what’s happening with the Hubble Space Telescope investigation. Are we still on? When will it happen? What else do you know that we don’t? Well, the answers are: yes definitely, I’m not sure and I can’t tell yet (sorry). To be more precise: our proposal was approved last year and the recent service mission was successful, so the Hubble is going to take a picture of my cloud. We didn’t hear anything official yet about when exactly, but the latest I’ve heard is that we’re pretty much first in line and it’ll happen this year. Last official letter I got from Baltimore, which I think I can share, was this one:

I’ve also created a new page with links about the discovery of a new class of objects called: ‘Peas’. I know a few journalists recently published the story calling them ‘Green Peas’, but…  I didn’t name the title of the start of my collection: ‘Give green Peas a chance’ (though I’m not saying you shouldn’t!). Anyway, thanks to other members of Galaxy Zoo, who started to collect those little green and round things with me, we now have discovered something else new… Peas in the universe!

Note: I’m a co-author on both papers of Hanny’s Voorwerp. They initially mentioned me as a co-author on the paper about the Peas too, but asked me later if I’d mind to gave that up, as there are more volunteers who found Peas after me. For those wondering… ;)
