Janey

My best friend passed away this morning. And yeah, I’m posting this on the net. Lots is already and even ‘manic optimistic me’ has days like these. Although I’m not entirely sure what ‘days like these’ means. Anyway, she’s gone forever.

Janey was on a holiday at my mum’s (up north) for a few weeks, where she had loads of fun going for walks – and swims. But yesterday mum called to say Jane had had a hemorrhage in her brain and that she couldn’t walk anymore. Her eyes also kept flickering from left to right and the doc had given her something so she wouldn’t have any pain, while I came over to say goodbye.

She came back to Earth when she saw me and showed with everything she had left that she was happy. We put a mattress down beside her, so I could hold her while she fell asleep. The next morning she fell asleep in my arms for the last time. My stepmum took this picture of our last moment together before she did.

So why this message? Think of it as a headstone. And fill in all the clichés in this last paragraph.

Thanks.

Hanny I am so sorry and genuinelly saddened by your loss. I know from following your blog Janey was a good friend and long time companion for you and will surely be missed.
Having two big yellow labs myself, I know how much a part of you they become. Even as I write this, my Howdy is curled up on his bed next to my desk. I also believe a person could not ask for a more genuine and loyal friend such as your Janey… true to the last full measure. Gone but certainly never forgotten.
My thoughts are with you this night.

So very sorry to hear about Janey. Its good that you got up north to see her so she could fall asleep in your arms one last time. And you make a really lovely tribute here to your long-term friend. x

Cheers you lot. Seriously, very moving comments and much appreciated. I’m just a bit too drained right now, but it’s okay. It will be. X

I’m sorry to read of your loss — and sorry to have taken so long to learn of it. (I’ve been traveling.)

Over the years, my wife and I have said our last goodbyes to three dogs, and it’s never an easy thing. If it’s any help, we still cherish our memories of our missing canine friends. And we savor the time we have with the dogs we have now.

I hope you find things work out the same way for you.

Thank you Tim, I’m sure it’ll be the same here indeed.

I’ve been showing off on my flickr page, where you can see the Queen ‘Days of Our Lives’ and Brian Cox’ Wonders DVDs. I also got a card with commander Chris Hadfield on it and a lovely English teapot. Marcel gave me a ukulele and Anja is working on a painting of my dear friend ‘in doggy heaven’; Janey.  [...]
