Spring! Break!

It’s not exactly spring yet, but the other day when I walked to school, it wasn’t as dark as it had been that day before. And I also heard a few birds singing “spring is coming soon”. Spring break is here now though and I’m going to be a cliché teacher and say I’m glad about that. Don’t get me wrong, I love my job. But I love doing a lot of other things too and sometimes I feel like I need a week to catch up on myself. What will keep me busy this week? Well, it’s not what it is for most people living in Limburg: Carnival.

But as a teacher, you can’t not celebrate it. Everyone comes to school dressed up. Kids pretend to be police officers, princesses, clowns. Or come as animals, or devils (no seriously!). Before the party they’ve asked each other the ‘what-are-you-going-to-be-question’ a lot of times. We dance, we have fun and then we go home. Most people stay dressed up until next Wednesday, going to cafés and parades. But I’m not one of the ‘most people’.

To be honest, I don’t exactly like the theme music. I do like the thought of going out and being able to dress the way you want, but shouldn’t it be like that all the time?! Although I think none of these are good arguments and I don’t hate it either. It’s also nice to see others having so much fun with it. So, for one day I do like to put some creativity into a costume.

I still had a black dress and since I usually wear the same blue jeans (to school), I’d be ‘different’ enough in that. I made a mask the day before and I put some dark make-up around my eyes. Tadaa, I was ready. Okay, I didn’t think it would be that great of a transformation, but I liked it. When I arrived at school, one of my colleagues walked passed me without saying ‘hi’ or anything. She came back – and then noticed it was me – said hi after all, laughing about the fact she didn’t recognise me right away. And I wasn’t even wearing my mask at that time!

Maybe the fact I went for subtle worked to my advantage. Not that it is your goal to go unrecognisable, but it’s fun when the kids look at you – confused – trying to see who’s under the blackness. I frequently took off my mask to hear: “Oh, it’s the music teacher!” Lots of them thought I looked pretty. Some of them asked: “But what are you?” My answer (which left some of them still confused): “I’m mysterious…!”

The little parade – complete with police escort – was fun. I mean, isn’t it exciting to walk in the middle of the street, waving at people who’re looking from behind their windows? Still, this holiday I’m not doing more of those. I have a ‘Skype-meeting’ with Pamela this weekend, to talk about how I’m going to help her team. I’m also going to make two posters for a big event coming up soon. (Yes I know I’m still being mysterious, but I will tell more in time). Anyway, I wish every ‘carnavalist’ a wonderful carnival and a lovely spring break to everyone else!
